The M40 gas mask was created to replace the M17, which had been in use for 30 years. The M17 was known for being bulky, uncomfortable, and having a subpar seal design. In 1984, the U.S. Army began developing a new mask without these issues. After the Gulf War, the M40 officially replaced the M17 for future conflicts. The modern M40A1 was introduced in the mid-1990s and became the primary mask for the Army, Marine Corps, and Navy in special cases. It was eventually replaced by the M50 in 2009 and fully retired in 2017. The M40 design proved to be highly effective in combat and was accompanied by various accessories such as optical inserts, chemical hoods, and ballistic lens outserts. This M40 USGI gas mask respirator and haversack, complete with grey and clear lenses, allows you to own a piece of military history. A must-have for collectors
